Kathleen Weikel Merna, of Gilberton, opens the door to her submerged car on Main Street in Gilberton on Friday, June 12, 2020. Heavy rain Wednesday night and Thursday morning caused flooding that spans Main Street to Railroad Street. Mahanoy Creek was blocked for bridge work on Route 924, and the pipes installed to channel water around the bridge are unable to handle the amount of water from the storm system. Weikel Merna has lived in Gilberton for about 20 years. Her house was left without power, and she has a lot of concerns. She and her wife, Margaret Merna, have many animals in the home, making it difficult to find a hotel. The couple is also without flood insurance as their home isn't considered to be in a flood plane.
